Yoruba Nation Rally Dispersed by Federal Government: Afenifere Accuses Government of Subduing Freedom of Expression** Lagos, Nigeria

The Afenifere, a Yoruba socio-political organization, has criticized the Federal Government for dispersing a Yoruba Nation rally in Lagos, labeling it an attempt to suppress freedom of expression in the country. In response to the rally, National Publicity Secretary Mr. Jare Ajayi stated that in a democratic nation, citizens have the right to protest and express their displeasure peacefully, as long as it follows the law. He maintained that the protest organized by Ilana Omo Oodua in Lagos was based on legal permission granted by the country. However, Afenifere Leader Chief Ayo Adebanjo emphasized that the organization is law-abiding and represents the citizens. While acknowledging that the Lagos government ordered the rally's suspension, Adebanjo insisted that it should not have been stopped, even if the government had valid reasons. Adebanjo accused the present government of suppressing freedom of expression, freedom of association, and any organization, body, or voice that does not align with its policies. He expressed his belief that if the rally had been supported by President Muhammadu Buhari, it would not have been stopped. He clarified that the rally was not intended to oppose the government but rather to seek support for the Yoruba Nation. Adebanjo emphasized that Afenifere is a federalist organization, and people advocating for secession have the right to do so within the bounds of the law and without resorting to violence. According to Adebanjo, the government's only role should have been to monitor the protest and prevent it from being hijacked by hoodlums. Instead, the government's actions have attracted negative attention and unnecessary criticism. Adebanjo urged the Federal Government to reconsider its approach to such demonstrations. The Afenifere's criticism of the Federal Government highlights the ongoing tensions between the government and groups seeking self-determination in Nigeria. The Yoruba Nation rally was one of several recent protests pushing for greater autonomy or secession in different parts of the country. The government's response to these demonstrations has raised concerns among rights groups and observers about the suppression of dissent and the erosion of democratic principles in Nigeria.
