BREAKING: Zamfara Residents Protest Alleged Troop Withdrawal, Women Block Army Vehicle

October 7, 2026

Residents of Bindin and surrounding communities in Zamfara State have protested against the reported withdrawal of military personnel from the area, expressing fears that the move could expose them to further attacks by armed bandits.

The protest reportedly took place in Bindin, Maru Local Government Area, following a deadly attack in the area that claimed the lives of at least nine security personnel, with some civilians also reportedly killed.

Hundreds of women, many dressed in hijabs, were seen taking part in the demonstration. In footage and photographs shared online, protesters reportedly surrounded an armoured military vehicle and prevented it from leaving the community.

Conflict reporter Bakatsine, who shared images of the incident, said residents were protesting an alleged plan to withdraw security personnel following the recent attack.

According to the report, residents believe that removing the troops could leave Bindin and neighbouring communities more exposed to attacks. They are reportedly demanding that the military maintain its presence in the area to provide security for residents.

A separate video shared on X by OSINT analyst Usman also showed a large gathering of women surrounding an army vehicle. Soldiers could be seen speaking with the protesters as the crowd reportedly tried to stop the vehicle from leaving.

The reported troop withdrawal comes amid continuing concerns over insecurity in Zamfara State, where armed bandit groups have carried out repeated attacks despite ongoing security operations.

The recent attack was reportedly linked to fighters loyal to notorious bandit leader Kachalla Gwaska Dankarami, who were said to have targeted Bindin and Gobirawar Chali communities.

Efforts to obtain an official response from the Defence Headquarters regarding the alleged troop withdrawal were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report. The Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, was reportedly unavailable for comment.

The Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Anele Appolonia, was also reportedly unavailable when contacted.

The protest reflects the growing concern among residents of northwestern communities, where many people say the presence of security forces remains critical to protecting lives and property amid persistent bandit attacks.

Note: The reported troop withdrawal and details surrounding the protest should be treated as allegations pending official confirmation from the Nigerian military.
