APC Wins Three FCT Area Councils While PDP Secures Gwagwalada, Collation Ongoing

February 22, 2026 | Abuja, FCT

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has clinched victories in three of the six Area Councils in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) took the Gwagwalada council as collation continues.

According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the APC won the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Bwari Area Council, and Kwali Area Council. PDP emerged victorious in Gwagwalada Area Council.

In AMAC, incumbent APC chairman Christopher Maikalangu polled 40,295 votes, defeating the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate with 12,109 votes, and the PDP candidate who scored 3,398 votes. In Bwari, APC’s Joshua Ishaku secured 18,466 votes, ahead of ADC’s 4,254 votes and Zenith Labour Party’s 3,515 votes. In Kwali, APC candidate Daniel Nuhu polled 17,032 votes, surpassing PDP’s Haruna Pai who garnered 8,575 votes.

Meanwhile, in Gwagwalada, PDP candidate Mohammed Kasim defeated APC’s Yahaya Shehu with 22,165 votes to 17,788. Smaller parties, including the Social Democratic Party (SDP), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Young Progressives Party (YPP), and others, recorded minimal votes. INEC described the election in Gwagwalada as peaceful and orderly, with 43,960 valid votes out of 46,294 accredited voters.

INEC is yet to announce results for the remaining two Area Councils, but the exercise has so far highlighted a competitive political landscape in the FCT, with the APC consolidating key councils and the PDP holding onto Gwagwalada.

The elections, conducted across all six FCT Area Councils, were closely monitored amid heightened political contestation, with smaller parties struggling to gain significant support in the declared results.
